eSUN super-tough PLA filament [ePLA-ST] is coming!

2020-06-28

The most widely used 3D printing filament on the market is PLA. As a cost-effective desktop-grade material, it has been used in education, home appliances, automobiles, aerospace and other fields with good accuracy, toughness, air oxidation resistance, etc.

However, when compared with other filaments, it also have obvious shortcomings. Not enough toughness and poor flame retardancy, its application in the automotive and electronic fields is greatly restricted. If expand PLA to a wider field, it is necessary to improve its durability, toughness, heat resistance, mechanical properties, hydrolysis resistance, and flame retardant properties.

eSUN PLA+ Print

☻ 3D printing material brand eSUN has launched commercial PLA 3D printing materials globally in 2007, simplifying consumer-grade 3D printing technology and reducing costs;

☻ Later developed PLA series products, such as eSUN PLA and PLA+, which have been selling well since launch;

☻ Follow-up, based on PLA filament, eSUN has improved the material with bright effect characteristics and launched the [eSilk-PLA filament] that has been well loved by customers;

☻ In 2019, with rich PLA research experience, the national standard "Polylactic Acid (PLA) filament for Fused Deposition Molding" drafted by eSUN was officially promulgated.

Today, eSUN is still devoted to research. For the durability of PLA, a super-tough PLA filament is about to be launched. The new product is named [ePLA-ST], which means super-tough PLA.

ePLA-ST is based on PLA resin. After adding high-performance modifiers and other additives, it is modified and granulated by a special twin-screw extruder and then prepared by a filament forming machine. The FDM 3D printer filament has the characteristics of high impact resistance, high elongation at break, low warping, high bonding strength, high printing accuracy, high precision, smooth printing, light aging resistance, and air oxidation resistance. It is suitable for continuous printing for a long time without nozzle carbonization risk.

ePLA-ST printing parameters

ePLA-ST】 is very suitable for printing some prototypes of mechanical parts with strength and precision requirements, and can even be directly made into functional final products. It is generally used in automobile parts, IT manufacturing, machinery and electrical parts and other fields.

3D printed parts using ePLA-ST

To be more clear we compared various performance of eSUN ePLA-ST and PLA prints under the same condition.

On the left is PLA, and on the right is ePLA-ST. The conclusion is that ePLA-ST is much tougher.

According to the data comparison, ePLA-ST's overall physical properties are stronger than eSUN's classic PLA. It has higher impact resistance, higher elongation at break, and better precision. In the follow-up, we also evaluated PLA+ and compared the printing performance of the three materials. The specific data conclusions are as follows.

ePLA-ST vs PLA+ vs PLA physical properties:

Note: Printing test conditions: nozzle 215℃; bottom plate 45℃; speed 40mm/s

In summary, ePLA-ST as a new product of eSUN PLA series, has higher impact resistance, higher elongation at break, lower warpage, and whiter color. During printing, the connection between layers is also very smooth, the print will be more resistant to light aging and air oxidation; it is easy to bend under pressure, not easily broken, and has super toughness!
